Welcome to my OTEN blog!
I was introduced to some interesting and new ideas that future educators like myself could use in the classroom. As you listen to the two of my sessions I attended, you'll see a world of new opportunities light up in your mind as it did for me. Hope you enjoy!

Decline in enrollment of learning disabled students
A recent study shows that many schools have observed a decline in enrollment of learning disabled students from recent years. To my understanding, a student with a potential learning disability is evaluated and observed by a teacher and then is assessed by a counselor and is labeled with having a disability when one is found.
A statistic that surprised me was that ~80% of students that get that label is because they simply struggle with reading at a certain grade level, and may have not learned in previous years.
In response to this statistic, I believe many of these students were not properly evaluated because it's not a fair situation to the student to label them for possibly not being quick to learn something that may have been assumed to be learned in past years. I also believe that when a student struggles with reading, we as educators must act quickly and not just see these kids as some lost cause, but to give extra attention to them and find appropriate resources to get them up on track for their grade level.

Blogging applications for teachers
Blogging is a unique and creative form of communication for students and teachers, but especially for students. With the rise in MySpace and other related accounts, kids are highly skilled with this form of expression and frequently use them to communicate with one another. While the old fashioned way to journal with paper and pen out the window, and an increase of online users, it only seems natural to keep up with the flow of technology and learn to embrace the pros and utilize the skills to help develop the students' toolbox for their future endeavors.
Blogging applications for teachers:
1. Organize students' progress, records, attendance sheets, etc., to eliminate as much paperwork as possible
2. Cater activities to students by using a form oftechnology that they are used to already
3. Teach new software and program designs to facilitate with group projects and collaboration
4. May give immediate feedback to students on assignments outside of school hours
5. Students may discuss about assignments with one another and gain different perspectives that may have not been shared during class time
6. Stir up interest in some students that may have different learning styles

Introduction: Personal Bio
Hello world!
Welcome to my very first blog ever!
My name is Joe Cho and I'm a fairly new resident of the Salem area! Prior to this assignment, I have heard of blogs and have friends that contribute to several blogs in their free time, however, I have not explored this area of communication ever until now, so this is very new to me and I'm excited to learn about how to use it effectively.
I am currently a part time student at Willamette University pursuing a Master's in Teaching and initial license with the intent to teach at the middle and high school level in math, science, and/or health. I live a relatively active lifestyle, and enjoy any activity that involves movement and a great work out! My favorite activities include basketball, hiking, frisbee, and cycling. I also enjoy exploring different cultures through the realm of food. In turn, I enjoy meeting new people especially if he/she is from a different culture from my own. Also, when I do get the chance, I take advantage of using more significant free time to travel outside of the U.S. So far, I've only been to three countries outside of the U.S. (Mexico, S. Korea, Canada). I'd like to build upon my travel resume later down the road.
I chose this career path of education after serving 2 years in AmeriCorps in Federal Way, WA. I have spent time with youth of various cultures and backgrounds and received first hand experiences within a public school setting and has been a real eye opening realization to the work that's being done inside the school walls. Nevertheless, I have gained a new perspective on how I view the youth and how I see the course that education is heading. Overall, I can definitely say that I can see great potential with our kids and what unique characteristics and skills they bring to the table.
